Attending church is part of the life of a true follower of Christ. So, it is therefore discouraged that you plan other non-church related activities that will be in conflict with Sunday services and other church-related programs.

However, there may be circumstances that’s beyond our control. For example, sickness or a school graduation that’s scheduled on a Sunday is something that we don’t have control over, so in cases like these God certainly understands the reason for the absence. But is still recommended that you let your Senior Pastor know about your circumstances.

Here are strong reasons why you should always attend church:
1. It is a way of showing our love for God.
Going to church is a tangible expression of our love for God. It is where we gather together to publicly show our faith and trust in God, something that’s required of all Christians.
“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” -Matthew 10:32-33
The church is also where we can praise, thank and honour the Father.
“I will declared Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You” -Psalm 22:22
For most people, the main reason why they go to church is personal: so they can be blessed. Although there is nothing wrong with this, we must not forget that the primary purpose of this corporal gathering is to actually bring “service” to God as a blessing to Him, because the Lord deserves to be honoured with service and devotion.
“Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord.” Psalm 134:2
“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power; For you created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created” -Revelation 4:11
2. It builds us up spiritually
Listening and understanding the Word of God builds up our spiritual strength.
Every once in a while we face conflicts that challenges our faith, so it is important that we are spiritually ready to face and overcome these challenges.
In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul said that Christians is in a constant wrestling match with evil spiritual forces, and warns that the church must wear a strong spiritual armour for protection as it will not be an easy battle.
That’s why it is important that we take every chance we get to receive the preaching and teaching of God’s Word.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” – Romans 10:17
3. The Lord comes in the midst of people who gathers to worship Him
Although Jesus lives in the heart of every believer, whenever two or more people gather specifically for prayer, worship or praise in His name, the Lord’s presence will be especially felt.
In a gathering dedicated for the Lord, Christ is able to touch the hearts of the people in a way that He may not at any other time.
“For when two or three are gathered in My name, I am there in the midst of them” -Matthew 18:20

4. It strengthens relationship with fellow Christians
Gathering together in church can also positively impact the Christian fellowship. The Bible said that a healthy relationship with God requires both a fellowship with God Himself and a fellowship with other believers.
It is simply not possible to love God without loving our brethren. If we have issue loving other Christians, then our relationship with God will become strained.
“But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” -Matthew 6:15
Furthermore, John wrote,
“He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him” 1 John 2:9-10
One of the reasons why going to church is important is so we can practice love toward others in the form of fellowship. Loving our brothers and sisters in Christ keeps us humble before God, and when we offer ourselves to God in humility, it is when Christ’s blood can truly cleanse us from our sins.
5. It is a way of showing our obedience to God
Going to church is also an act of obedience to God. The Bible clearly states that continued absence to church can lead to wilfull sin.
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,” -Hebrew 10:24-26
Going to church and coming together in the name of the Lord is also a way of helping and motivating each other — a responsibility charged to every follower of Christ. If we reject church attendance, it’s like we’re also rejecting one of the sacred duties Christ assigns us.

“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” -James 4:17
6. It provides accountability to spiritual leadership
As part of a church fellowship, we are to recognize and follow the authority of spiritual leaders, within the boundaries of God’s Word.
“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you” Hebrew 13:17
God made someone lead the congregation to make sure everything is organized and that His flock is protected from chaos that disorganization may bring… this is why we have elders, pastors, or leaders leading the church.

If we want to follow God’s Word and submit to the people He had appointed to lead His people, then we must commit and create a relationship with our church leaders. One way of doing this is by regularly attending Sunday service and participating in church-related activities.

7. Our prayers become stronger
The Bible says that when we pray together with the brethren, we are in special favour with God.
“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven” -Matthew 18:19
The more people gather together to pray and worship the Lord, the stronger the faith and the greater the spiritual gains will be for everyone.
“Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall by the sword before you” Leviticus 26:8
8. It is a way of honouring the Lord’s Day
God’s fourth commandment specifically tells us to set aside the seventh day of the week as a holy day to the Lord.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” -Exodus 20:8
Originally, Saturday is the Lord’s day, as it is the Sabbath day. However, after Jesus’ rising from the dead on the first day of the week, Sunday, the early Christians start to meet on this day as well, just as they would meet on Sabbath day with the Jewish community in the synagogues.
Christian Jews eventually viewed Sunday as a combined observance of the Sabbath and the resurrection day of Jesus. -Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2

This day of Christian worship was called as the Lord’s Day (Revelation 1:10), which is a day to celebrate the resurrection, to worship, pray and study God’s Word together.
